In December 2014 SLASPA launched its interisland Less than Container Load (LCL) initiative. This initiative was geared toward promoting the movement of LCL cargo within the CARICOM region through a tariff amendment that provided a reduced rate to importers and exporters of CARICOM origin goods.
Prior to SLASPA’s launch, the port of Point Lisas Industrial Port Development Corporation (PLIPDECO) in Trinidad launched a similar initiative. These tariff amendments afford opportunity to traders in the market by introducing pricing mechanisms for freight carriers that deliver reasonable expectation of cost predictability in traders’ supply chains (at least between Trinidad and St. Lucia) – something absent in the past. LCL cargo is to be priced based on what is in a container, not based on the container load.
PLIPDECO and SLASPA are joining forces to promote this novel approach to intra-regional trade and discuss with the St. Lucia private sector how they can take advantage of this opportunity to grow their businesses.
