St. Lucia Chamber of Commerce hosted EU Funded Projects Coordination Meeting

Thursday 11th March, 2010 saw the St. Lucia Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture host an EU Funded Projects Coordination Meeting at Auberge Seraphine, Vigie Cove.  The meeting, a brain child of the Competitiveness Through Linkages (CTL) Project implemented by the Chamber, brought together the many project managers who have been charged with executing the various EU funded projects in St. Lucia at this time.

The Meeting’s objective was to share information on the various Projects that are simultaneously being implemented by various implementing agencies. Project Managers shared information on ongoing work, procedures, sectors of focus, regional and geographic concentration and beneficiary communities as well as experiences, challenges and opportunities confronted.  The intention being to increase and deepen collaboration, leverage resources, minimize duplication and avoid abuses in use of project funds, which would all lead to greater project impact for St. Lucia.

The CTL Project seeks to increase the ability of suppliers of goods and services to meet the requests and demands of buyers and users of their goods and services. The Project will provide the critical support to conclude a sales transaction on behalf of suppliers. It does not offer a predetermined menu of services or solutions, but seeks to respond to the specific need of the client.  It excludes the provision of equipment and financing and has a budget of EUR 1.3 million / EC$ 4.6.  The Project will run until December 2011.

The CTL Project was joined by six other EU funded projects namely SEQUA – Economic Diversification & Private Sector Development SFA 2004; the Eco Agro Tourism Project SFA 2007, implemented by the Ministry of Tourism; SFA 2006 Programme of Assistance for Agriculture in the Windward Islands, implemented by the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations; Banana Commercialization and Agricultural Diversification SFA2005, implemented by the Banana Industry Trust; SFA 2006 Poverty Reduction through Community Based Development Planning implemented by St. Lucia Social Development Fund (SSDF) and the Social Recovery and Human Development Project SFA 2004, implemented by the National Skills Development Centre (NSDC).  The AGIL - Banana Commercialisation & Agricultural Diversification in St. Lucia SFA 2004 and the SFA 2005 – STRIDE, implemented by the Office of Private Sector Relations (OPSR) were unable to attend.

An indication of the high value placed on such a collaborative and cooperative framework was the attendance by three high level European Union Delegate Officers from the Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean Office, Mr. Hubert Perr, Head of Operations; Mr. Mikael Melin, Attaché and Ms Camille Wildman, Project Officer-Private Sector.  Also in attendance were representatives from the National Authorizing Office and observers from key agencies like the St. Lucia Hotel & Tourism Association (SLHTA), St. Lucia Manufacturers Association (SMA) and Small Enterprise Development Unit (SEDU).

The Competiveness Through Linkages Project intends to host those types of Coordination Meetings quarterly, to foster greater collaboration as well as better target project actions for maximum and social impact.

Business Mission Programme 2010

The St. Lucia Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture is in the process of planning its Business Missions Programme for 2010, to give members first-hand experience of potential and/or target markets; help gain invaluable new markets; consolidate market positions, critical market information and understanding as well as an opportunity to assess their business’s potential abroad.

Through diagnostics of firms under the Competitiveness through Linkages Project, the Chamber is increasingly being made aware of the high quality of goods and services available on Island with export potential. Thus, we are recommencing this Export Promotion Activity.

In the past, the Chamber has successfully arranged Business Missions to St. Vincent, Grenada, Dominica, Antigua, St. Maarten and Tortola.

The objectives of the Business Mission include:

• Scout new potential markets
• Establish new business contacts
• Increase export earnings
• Strengthen trade
• Identify new business opportunities
• Seek representation for their products through agents and distributors

In that context, your assistance is invited to help identify the Business Mission Destinations and I look forward to receiving an early response to facilitate timely planning.

Manufacturers, distributors, service providers and firms seeking to establish cross border business relationships are encouraged to participate.

The Chamber urges Members to complete the attached Business Mission Form at your earliest possible convenience.
