The Chamber extends its deepest sympathies following the devastating fire that occurred overnight at the Computer World Building in Bois D ‘Orange, Gros Islet. Our thoughts are with the building owners, the businesses operating within the facility, and all employees whose work and livelihoods have been affected by this unfortunate event.
We recognize the significant impact on Computer World Saint Lucia Ltd., the Environmental Health Division of the Ministry of Health, Wellness and Nutrition, and the wider community that relies on the services provided at this location. The incident has disrupted critical public health functions carried out by the Environmental Health Division, which plays an important role in safeguarding the nation through food safety monitoring, sanitation oversight, environmental inspections, and public health surveillance.
While the extent of the damage continues to be assessed, we are grateful that there have been no reports of injuries or loss of life. We also commend the Saint Lucia Fire and Emergency Services and all responding personnel who worked diligently and under demanding conditions to contain the fire and protect nearby properties.
At this stage, the cause of the fire remains unknown. In light of this event, the Chamber encourages businesses across the island to place strong emphasis on proactive health and safety practices within their operations.
Companies are urged to review and strengthen their fire prevention measures, hazard management protocols, and staff training programmes, particularly where their operations involve hazardous equipment, electrical systems, stored products, or materials that may pose safety risks. Implementing comprehensive safety systems and ensuring employees are properly trained can greatly improve the ability to identify hazards early and reduce the potential impact of emergencies.
The Chamber stands in solidarity with all those affected by this tragic incident and remains hopeful for a swift recovery for the businesses, organizations, and individuals impacted.
